The Yoruba Alliance Spent $55,OOO -- To Bring Yorubas Together In The U.S.A.

In our continued attempt to dispel the common myth that the Yoruba people can not come together to organize any event successfully without bitter fight and confusion, The Yoruba Alliance has been since August 1996 bring our people together like it has never been done before. Over ten different Yoruba Associations representing all areas of Yorubaland have left no stone unturned in our preparation to organize what has now become an Annual major event of the largest gathering of Yoruba people outside of Nigeria.

Between 1996 and 1998, we have successfully carried out many activities that included; two major Yoruba Picnics with several thousand people of Yoruba descent in attendance, the 1998 Yoruba festival with people from as far away as Canada, Britain and all around the Continental United States, the Yoruba Alliance Night 1998 that marked the first congregation of several Yoruba Associations, and a Yoruba Prayer Day that brought together both the Muslim and Christian leaders. There are many other activities that time and space will not permit us to mention.

The most encouraging news regarding this gathering, is the opportunity for many Yoruba to participate in the largest family reunion of this kind anywhere. Beside, the major part of the money was raised within the Yoruba community. Also, The Yoruba Alliance was able to fulfill one of its cardinal policies, that is, whenever it is time to spend our money, the Yoruba business must come first. We were able to spend $48,000 with businesses in the Yoruba community between 1996 and 1998. This, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the lessons that Yoruba Alliance is trying to teach our community. We are very proud that we are not only preaching it, but anytime we can, we are actually doing it.

Now that the Yoruba Alliance has gone corporate in our donation request, we will continue to put our community businesses before any other business. We have received large donations from big American corporations such as D.C. Lottery, Prudential Insurance and many others. This year, we will go after companies that our community patronizes such as AT&T, MCI, Western Union and many others.
